Rotate Your Ceiling Fan Blades

Do you have ceiling fans?

If so, do they rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise?

I bet you just looked at the fan if you’re in the room, right?

Well, here’s the next question: which direction does your fan cool and which direction does it warm?

Different fans rotate to cool clockwise or counter-clockwise so you will need to test in each room. To do so, first note if your fan is spinning to the left or right when looking up and then turn off the fan. When the blades stop spinning, use a step ladder to reach up on the base of the fan. You’ll find a small switch usually near the light bulbs which can easily be pushed.

Then, turn the fan back on and the blades should pin in the opposite direction. Stand under the fan, is it cooler?

Remember that heat rises, even in a small bedroom. So a fan that spins to cool lifts hot air up and a fan that spins to warm, pushes hot air down.

Once you discover which way your fan cools and warms, write it down in your Notes app or other handy spot.

Then, add a reminder to your calendar to switch your fans when the seasons change.

For most folks when they start the AC for the summer months or the heater for the winter, it’s a great time to update the fans to match.

Please, for your own health, never reach up to the fan when it’s on and don’t look for that little switch unless the fan is off. Trust me, you don’t want to get knocked in the head with a spinning fan blade.
